Flats Fishing in an 18’ Gordon Waterman 2007 Flats Boat. 1-2 persons.
Preparing for a flats fishing expedition is not unlike preparing for any fishing trip. You will want to wear clothing that is light and airy, allowing you to be comfortable as the heat of the day progresses. Since you will be near or on the water for most of the time, make sure you wear a strong sunscreen and take along some sort of head covering, such as a hat or baseball cap. That said prepare yourself for a lot of fun and a lot of fish in Mosquito Lagoon!
Backwater and Florida flats fishing combine the best of both worlds: shallow, sheltered waters and aggressive, hard-fighting fish. For anglers transitioning from freshwater fishing to saltwater fishing, the inland creeks, back bays and flats will feel like familiar territory. For those new to fishing, backwater and flats provide a sheltered playing field on which to learn the game.
Once a fishing spot is located, Captain Shane will quietly pole his skiff within casting range to give you a great presentation. Once hooked up you will know why Redfish are such a prized game fish. If positioned properly there can be several opportunities to quality Redfish in the same school. As the day ends you will have great memories of unforgettable Florida fishing in the world famous Mosquito Lagoon.

Inlet & Near Shore Fishing in a 2008 24’ Pathfinder Tournament Bay Boat. 1-3 persons.
Backwater Flats offers some of the best inshore fishing on all of the east coast of Florida. Depending on the ocean conditions and types of fish we want will determine where we fish. As a general rule, the larger species are more available during the warmer months and with a bit of luck and skill, you'll have a shot at a real trophy. The cooler months are where it's at for those looking for lots of action. The cooler months offer large numbers of many different species.
Inshore Fishing - Inside the inlet in the rivers and backwaters of Ponce Inlet and Mosquito Lagoon.
Nearshore Fishing - East of the beach to 20 miles out in the ocean.
Captain Shane runs out of Down the Hatch Restaurant and Marina. Spring time Florida fishing brings up the Manta Rays and Cobia is what's on the menu. We ride up and down the beaches and look for these rays on the surface of the water, which exceed 20 ft. wide with Cobia hanging tight underneath waiting for a free meal to land in their face. As summer approaches we switch gears to fishing the beaches for Tarpon, Kingfish and a lot of Sharks. This is also a great time of year to push off to that 15-20 mile range and target species like Snapper, Amber Jack, Grouper and a variety of other common reef species. Clicking on any of the fish names, will direct you to our photo gallery so you can see the variety of happy anglers who caught some of these incredible Florida fish.
All fishing is done on light tackle spinning gear to get the most out of your trophy catch! As fall swings into action the inlets and passes heat up with loads of Redfish and a few Snook mixed into the catch. This is done by either anchoring up or drifting the inlet for these fish which can exceed 40lbs. in weight.
Finally, as the weather gets cold and winter sets in, the shallow waters of Mosquito Lagoon become a haven for huge schools of hungry Redfish. These fish are caught in 3ft or less of water that is as clear as the water you drink. It is the only time of year where you can have so many sight fishing opportunities.
